Fibreglass reinforced polyester resin is the material of choice for manufacturing high-end faux rocks. Used for over 50 years in demanding industries (boating, aerospace, automotive), it offers a set of properties ideal for outdoor and aquatic décors.
Reinforced polyester (or polyester laminate) is a composite made of two elements:
The combination of these two materials creates a light and resistant composite, perfectly suited to manufacturing faux rocks intended for permanent outdoor use.
Reinforced polyester resists impact, static loads and mechanical stress. A polyester faux rock can support a person's weight, withstand an accidental impact and keep its shape for decades without deformation.
Polyester is chemically inert to products commonly found outdoors and around pools: chlorine, salt, bromine, cleaning products, fertilisers. It does not degrade, does not stain and does not react with these substances.
UV, frost, heat, humidity, wind – reinforced polyester withstands all weather conditions without cracking, discolouring or warping. This is a major advantage over other materials such as polystyrene (which yellows and becomes brittle), concrete (which can crack from frost) or wood (which rots with moisture).
Reinforced polyester is 8 to 10 times lighter than natural stone of the same volume. This lightness considerably eases the transport, handling and installation of faux rocks, without requiring heavy machinery or reinforced foundations.
Polyester is completely waterproof. It does not retain moisture, does not encourage moss or lichen growth and does not become waterlogged. It is the ideal material for aquatic décors: pool, waterfall, pond, fountain.
With a lifespan of over 20 years in permanent outdoor conditions, reinforced polyester is one of the most durable materials on the market. Polyester boat hulls, permanently exposed to salt water and UV, attest to this exceptional longevity.
Polystyrene is cheap but fragile: it breaks, scratches, yellows in the sun and does not withstand impact. Its appearance is often plastic-like and unconvincing. Polyester is incomparably stronger, more durable and more realistic.
Concrete is heavy, can crack from frost, and its finish depends entirely on the applicator's skill. Polyester, moulded from real rock, offers consistent, guaranteed realism, with much less weight.
Reconstituted stone is heavy, costly to transport and limited in terms of shapes and relief. Polyester offers total creative freedom with minimal weight.
At Poly Rock Concept, we exclusively use high-quality reinforced polyester for all our creations. Every faux rock is hand-laminated in our workshop in Nice, with resins and fibreglass selected for their quality. The result is a polyester resin decorative rock of exceptional strength, realism and durability.
Reinforced polyester resin is the reference material for high-end faux rocks. Its properties – strength, lightness, waterproofing, longevity – make it the ideal choice for all outdoor decoration, pool development and wall cladding projects. It is the guarantee of a durable investment and a flawless aesthetic result.
